This week’s episode of Business Growth Secrets features special guest, James Constantinou – Entrepreneur, luxury pawn broker and star of Channel 4 show, Posh Pawn.
James Constantinou is the founder of luxury pawnbroking business Prestige Pawnbrokers. As a regulated lender James took the decision to scale down to a remote service following the initial outbreak of Covid 19, placing staff on furlough as all stores were shut. He acted quickly and launched an online evaluator due to the sheer number of people using ‘lockdown’ to clear lofts, desks, drawers and cupboards, many finding potentially valuable items and antiques and for others using the evaluator as a way of generating extra money against assets such as stamps, coins, jewellery, art work and vintage watches. Lack of access to funds for clients and business owners meant they were seeing new enquiries from people desperately in need of a short term cash injection. This was businesses desperately trying not to have to lay off staff and individuals who were simply trying to put food on the table for their families.
It was in 2004 when James, a former property developer, saw a gap in the market when he was reading one of the Sunday tabloids on asset lending. He had many friends who although were asset rich they were cash poor. They were driving around in expensive cars and living in mansions, however, they could no longer afford the petrol in their cars or pay their electricity bills. Gone were the days of being able to get a ‘quick’ cash loan from the banks but James thought of a way he could. James first opened Prestige Pawnbrokers in Weybridge, Surrey and it wasn’t long before customers came in their droves with their high-end assets such as handbags, watches, private jets, yachts, rare works of art and memorabilia through to the weird and wonderful such as Hitler’s arm band, Queen Victoria’s bloomers and rare whale faeces. Amazed by some of the assets people wanted to pawn and the stories and characters attached made for great TV.
James is also the founder of a relatively new business called Logistical Supplies which provides PPE vending stations to high traffic areas in both the retail and leisure arenas. This venture offers aims to offer relief to organisations in retail, public venues and entertainment spaces. The solution giving a glimpse of hope to those venues yet to be able to function as a result of the pandemic including sporting arenas , festivals, concert halls, theatres as well as transport links to name but a few. A free vending solution is also available to large work environments wishing to give some comfort to staff and visitors alike Available from the Vending machines are hand sanitisers, wipes, gloves and masks.
Luxury pawn broker and Entrepreneur James Constantinou was the star of hit channel 4 show Posh Pawn (8 series in and repeated daily) He currently has stores in Weybridge, Hatton Garden, Richmond, Loughton, Manchester and Brighton which opened during lockdown with a further store to open in Guildford. Prestige Pawnbrokers have seeing a huge spike in sales of luxury goods for cash throughout the pandemic and James says that collectors of unusual luxury goods are well placed to make a profit, should they sell. Unusual watches, handbags, and gold pieces are performing extremely well. He believes these are symptoms of recession and the demand for large loans against assets is up 300% and it’s from new clients with Covid related issues.
